Hunslet Hawks 12 Swinton Lions 38
Ian Rigg reports from South Leeds Stadium
The Lions continued their good form with an excellent win against the Hawks in a match which saw two players pass memorable milestones.
Steve McCormacks men had the better start and Richie Hawkyard had a chance in the seventh minute when he got over the try line but lost the ball as he tried to touch down. From the re-start the Hawks lost the ball on the first tackle and the Lions put more pressure on the line which ended when Ian Watson sent a measured kick over the line for Martin Ainscough to go over and score his one hundredth try of his career and Gavin Dodd converted. Watson then kicked a nice forty-twenty but they couldn't capitalise on it and score more points. The home side had their first real chance on thirteen minutes when Tommy Haughey made a break but he was well tackled by Kevin Penny and lost the ball in the process.
The Lions then had two more good chances when firstly Ainscough sent Penny on a run down the left with three in support but somehow his inside pass found Hawks fullback Elliot Hodgson and the try was bombed and then Ainscough again made the break to hand on to Richie Hawkyard but the final pass to Dodd went to ground. Hawks levelled the scores on twenty-eight minutes when John Oakes scored on the left and Luke Helliwell converted but the Lions hit back seven minutes later when Dodd scored in the corner from a nice pass by Adam Higson but he could not add the conversion in the wind , but the third Lions try came three minutes from the break when Tom Armstong sent Penny away to score by the posts and Dodd converted to give the Lions a comfortable lead at the break.
Hawks almost scored in the opening minute of the second half when the Lions lost the ball on the first tackle but Luke Menzies could not control the pass and he too lost the ball just short of the line and the chance went. Glenn Riley almost scored on forty-four minutes but he knocked on as he dived for the ball over the line but Ainscough scored his second when again Watson kicked over the line and he reacted the quickest to score and Dodd converted. Ryan Benjafield bombed a chance for the Hawks on fifty-seven minutes and then Armstrong had a chance for the Lions on the hour before Dale Cunniffe crashed in by the posts after good build up play by Higson and Hawkyard and again Dodd converted.
Dodd scored his second try on sixty-nine minutes when he latched onto a Watson kick to the right to go over to claim one thousand points in his career and he again added the conversion points. Mike Morrison was then put on report after and incident with David March and from this penalty Hawks scored again when Joe McLocklan scored by the posts and Helliwell converted again but the Lions finished the scoring with two minutes left when Dodd completed his hat trick but Dodd was unable to convert.
