Doncaster 36 Swinton Lions 18

Ian Rigg reports from The Keepmoat Stadium

If the Lions learn to play for the full eighty minutes one day they are going to take someone to the cleaners on the scoreboard.

Last week we saw a promising first half at Keighley and a poor second half which ultimately cost us victory but at Doncaster it was the opposite. Too many penalties against and some weak tackling allowed the Dons to gain a thirty point lead before the Lions started an impressive fight-back and an excellent second half of good defence and attack.

The Lions took the kick-off and completed the first set with an excellent forty-twenty from Liam McGovern only to lose the ball from the scrum. Zeb Luisi had the Dons first attack but lost the ball in a good position in the third minute.

Neil Rigby went close for the Lions a few minutes later only to be knocked into touch as he went for the corner. Marlon Billy put an excellent hit on Luisi in the seventh minute but the officials found it a little too aggressive and penalised him.

From the resulting kick-to-touch the pressure on the Lions line was too much and Corey Lawrie sent Kyle Briggs over in the corner for the first try to which he added the conversion.

Four minutes later they were in again when the Lions right side defence moved out too soon and Jason Hart went through a huge gap to score and Briggs again converted. The Lions tried to hit back and Phil Wood almost got Bruce Johnson away they were pulled back for a forward pass.

The Dons then ran in three tries in a seven minute period when Wayne Rettie raced in at the corner followed by a short range effort from Luisi before Lawrie raced forty metres for the third. Briggs converted all three.

Swinton hit back on the stroke of half time when some good pressure on the line saw Martin Moana crash over under the posts and Gary Sykes converted.

I am not sure what Paul Kidd said to the team at half time or in-fact what they had in their half time cuppa but it certainly worked as they were far the better side in the second half.

Wood added the second try five minutes into the second half when he went in from close range after good play by the immense Rob Line and Sykes again added the conversion points.

The officials placed a lifting incident on report four minutes later and then Marlon went close on fifty-one minutes.

Things got better for the Lions on fifty-five minutes when Johnson went over from close range yet again and Sykes again obliged with the conversion points. The Dons were clearly wobbling now and Wood almost snatched a second on the hour but was pulled for obstruction as he darted over.

The Dons denied the Lions the bonus point with seven minutes left when Briggs scored from a rare attack and he also added the conversion. In the final minute a scuffle involving Dean Colton and Chris Tyrer was placed on report by the officials.
